School-2-Farm programs are increasing throughout our nation, both in rural and urban communities, impacting practices at schools and early childhood care facilities. In partnership with the FFA program at Mattoon High School, Fit-2-Serve facilitates School-2-Farm programming with approximately 120 2nd graders during the academic year.
School-2-Farm programming begins in September with a trip to the community garden to assist with the harvest The students then return to the garden in May to help plant for the new growing season. Three trips are made to Mattoon High School during the academic year to learn various farming techniques lead by FFA students. The School-2-Farm team visits individual classrooms in the months of March and April where we begin planting indoors.
Currently, food harvested from the community gardens is not purchased to be consumed by students through the cafeteria meal offerings; but it is our hope that, in time, this will come to fruition.
